Singapore is a city with a uniquely diverse past, shaped by the convergence of cultures engendered by its position as a trading post. Once a godown, or warehouse, during the height of the region’s spice industry, The Warehouse Hotel, which opened this month, pays tribute to its origins and the history of the city it has emerged from.
The inaugural property from hyped hospitality firm The Lo & Behold Group – whose existing endeavours include Tanjong Beach Club, The Black Swan and Odette – and designed by homegrown creative agency Asylum, The Warehouse Hotel retains its industrial allure while at the same time infusing elements of old and new Singapore. The lobby is home to a retail installation curated by furniture creator Gabriel Tan in collaboration with Edwin Low from Supermama that assembles vintage and one-off items that mirror those the warehouse’s original bosses would have used, such as lighters, ashtrays and flasks.
37 rooms and suites exude understated appeal with orginal masonry walls and in-room amenities from local design brands, including specially commissioned coffee and tea mugs from ceramic studio Mud Rock and curated minibars showcasing indulgent treats from across the region.
Cocktails and culinary offerings come courtesy of the lobby bar and the hotel’s flagship restaurant, Po, respectively. Overseen by chef Willin Low, founder of acclaimed modern Singaporean eatery Wild Rocket, Po presents updated interpretations of time-honoured classics created using only the finest and freshest ingredients available. There’s also a rooftop pool overlooking the river, presenting more than a moment’s respite in the modern metropolis and completing the experience awarded by this brand new hotel.
