Kelly Hoppen

Over the past four decades, Kelly has employed numerous talents to build her empire. As interior designer, she’s made her mark in the homes of private clients, the interiors of Celebrity Cruises and British Airways’ first class cabin, high-end hotels, as well as restaurants.

For her work in interior design and more, the Queen awarded Kelly with the Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2009.

Inspired by the bottomless well of fuel and creativity that has driven her illustrious career – and that continues to drive her – we reached out to Kelly Hoppen MBE, and sought for a glimpse of her own sources of inspiration these days.

Which piece are you most proud of designing?

I work equally hard on every assignment, from my interior projects to products and collaborations. They’re all so different and unique, and each one has details and specific features I have always wanted to include. They are all my favourite, if I am honest!

Over the last couple of years, I have really enjoyed working on my furniture ranges, and layering textures has become a big part of that. I also loved working with Apaiser, because they are able to interpret my designs perfectly and bring to life my vision. Most recently, I have collaborated with Restoration Hardware, and my range of soft furnishings for RH is an embodiment of my east-meets-west design philosophy. I absolutely loved creating this new range with a brand that I absolutely adore.

What’s your favourite material of the moment?

Textures are very important to me; feeling is everything. It adds a new dimension to the room and to your mood. Linen, velvets and leather are my favourites; you can combine these in so many ways to add depth and sensuality to a room.

Favourite restaurant?

I have always been a fan of the River Cafe in London. The best place to go for a good English breakfast is Tom’s in Notting Hill – we often go when we’re in town. Also the restaurant at The Arts Club in Dover Street, London – I love the fish and shellfish. The atmosphere there is great!

Favourite travel destination?

I love to travel, it brings me so much inspiration! I love Mauritius and go there as much as I can.

Can you name a designer who’s been particularly inspiring to you recently?

I am constantly inspired and love to seek out new designers and styles. One designer who really inspires me is John Pawson – he is so creative and timeless.
